Boulder City, about 20 miles southeast of Las Vegas, has the distinction of being one of only 2 cities in Nevada to prohibit gambling (the other town is Panaca). Boulder City was built in 1932 by the Bureau of Reclamation to house workers who were building that construction known as Boulder Dam at the time (name later changed to Hoover Dam). The city was designed by Saco Rienk DeBoer, a landscape architect. In the beginning, all forms of gambling, membership in unions and sales of alcohol were banned inside the town's limits. The Bureau of Reclamation finally relinquished control of the town in 1958 and Boulder City became incorporated on January 4, 1960. The Boulder City city charter still prohibits gambling. Alcohol sales were finally allowed in 1969. The city charter also only allows hotels of no more than 35 rooms and limits housing growth to 120 new single- or multi-family residental building permits per year. Boulder City has a total area of 202.6 square miles, making it the largest city by land area in Nevada, and 35th largest in the U.S. |
