Lake Maloya is the Raton city water supply. That means it's an excellent fishing lake but artificial lures and bait only and no gas powered boats. It's in a beautiful area in the northern part of Sugarite State Park, south of Raton Mesa and just below the New Mexico-Colorado state line. The road approaches from the south and crosses the dam to the east side of the lake. It continues north for several miles, passing the parking area for Lake Dorothey State Wildlife Area and ending at the gate to the James John State Wildlife Area. There are several camping and picnic areas along the way with several parking areas along the lake for folks who need to be closer to the water.
