Haystack Mountain OHV Area
The Haystack Mountain OHV Area is 1,920 acres of excellent riding trails among the rugged breaks above the Pecos River in eastern New Mexico.
The terrain is extremely rugged with deep gullies and difficult hill climbs in and out of a large sandstone escarpment, although beginners and experts alike can find their own footing among the sandy washes and bare rock. Every year nationally sanctioned "Trials" events happen here.
Camping is allowed in the large parking lot used for public events and in pull-outs next to the sun shelters. Dispersed camping is allowed anywhere in the OHV area, but access is allowed only for OHVs. There are several picnic sites with tables, grills and shelters. Toilets are close by but there is no drinking water available.
Haystack Mountain OHV Area is about 22 miles northeast of Roswell via US 70 and is open year round.
Use fees for the area: Individual - $3; Vehicle (2 or more people) - $5; Bus (more than 15 people) - $15.
