The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad winds across the Southern San Juan Mountains and the northern Tusas Mountains as it makes its way between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado.
This is one of the premier scenic railroad trips in America, spending a lot of the journey above 9,000 feet and crossing some of the most pristine mountain wilderness in the country. This is the highest and longest narrow-gauge track in America.
Built in 1880, it was built with a 36" track width (as opposed to the US standard 56.5") by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad as it moved into the San Juan silver mining district. Over time, the value of that district declined and the tracks were abandoned in 1969.
In 1970, Colorado and New Mexico bought the track, buildings, engines and cars and re-opened as a tourist train in 1971. The Cumbres & Toltec runs from May 28 to October 16, every day of the week except Friday. Call 888-286-2737 for more info and tickets.
